what am i watching?

The short version:
you're watching a post-modern take on Commedia dell'Arte, an italian renaissance-era performance style born in the streets that used stock characters to investigate power structures in the communities in which it was performed. It was the origin of the term "slapstick comedy," and when done right it is fast, funny, and political in easily digestible ways.
Commedia dell'Arte was the first professional theatre produced after the fall of rome. touring groups of Commedia dell'Arte performers were led by women, and influenced Shakespeare and other early modern performances, the opera, ballet, and our modern sitcoms.
We think it's exactly the right form for our modern age - unapologetically joyful at a time when discussions of class and power have important consequences.
